Airborne Software: Communication and Certification

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper discusses the distributed nature of airborne software intensive systems. The concept of fly-by-wire, the issues of safety, component communication, and certification are on the forefront of modern airborne applications. Since the communication between variety of onboard systems and subsystems is of paramount importance, the paper discusses the properties of new bus standard based on the Ethernet protocol gaining recognition and widespread use in large commercial aircraft. Avionics Full Duplex Switched Ethernet (AFDX) addresses quality of service, determinism, and reliability required in an aircraft environment. AFDX has reduced the cost of aircraft data networks, increased network capability, and supported determinism required by the airborne system certification guidelines system.

Safety certification of airborne software: An empirical study

Many safety-critical aircraft functions are software-enabled. Airborne software must be audited and approved by the aerospace certification authorities prior to deployment. The auditing process is timeconsuming, and its outcome is unpredictable, due to the criticality and complex nature of airborne software. To ensure that the engineering of airborne software is systematically regulated and is ...

The Challenges of Software Certification

The safety critical community – those involved in developing and verifying safety critical systems – is very conservative and adverse to change. Meanwhile, technology is changing rapidly, and there is pressure to adapt systems to improve their efficiency and safety. This presents a number of challenges. The community has already addressed some; others are in process. While the guidance on airbo...

Object-Oriented Technology (OOT) In Civil Aviation Projects: Certification Concerns

Object-Oriented Technology (OOT) has been extensively utilized throughout the nonsafety rated software development community (e.g., Windows 98 and Internet software). Although the adoption of OOT has been limited in the airborne civil aviation community, OOT is being considered by an increasing number of manufacturers of airborne software. Application of RTCA DO-178B/EUROCAE ED-12B ("Software C...
